My three year project documenting the capital city of Mongolia. This is a place that captivated and drew me in on my first visit back in 2015, and I have visited every year since then.
Ulaanbaatar is a place that can be readily divided into two distinct areas: firstly, the downtown area, which is full of post Soviet architecture, and home to a new kind of contemporary urban Asian culture. Secondly, on the outskirts of the city lies the area known as the “Ger district”. This area is home to communities of semi-nomadic people, who have recently moved to the city from the wide, barren steppe.
These images attempt to convey the bewildering differences (and quirky similarities) between these two parts of the city. The work is ongoing, and I aim to return and continue to add to it.
